Qui aimeriez-vous pour vous remplacer si Jack meurt ?
Personne..putain !!Je passerais en mode Jack Bauer et je ferais tout pour tuer ce connard. C'est mon job et les gens doivent savoir que quand je m’en irais, ça va ruer dans les brancards. Disons que, même si Jack venait à mourir, il y a beaucoup de grands acteurs qui pourraient jouer dans 24, mais cela ne signifie pas que je serais heureux de voir ça

C’est exigeant physiquement le rôle de Jack Bauer?
La série doit avoir cette énergie qui brûle comme un putain de rock dans un bar. Ce n'est pas un morceau de jazz lent. Donc, j’aime les combats. Je sais que si ça fait mal, ça être génial à regarder. Quand vous taper sur quelqu’un ou que votre personnage se fait battre, vous créez une énergie qui fait partie d'un spectacle tel que 24. Vous ne pouvez pas truquer les combats, ou 24 n’aura pas ce succès. Quand on se bat, on se bat. Quand ça a l’air de faire mal, je vous jure, putain ça fait mal !

Est-il vrai que certains épisodes de 24 a dû être réécrit pour tenir compte de certaines blessures?
Parfois  vous ne pouvez plus rien faire parce que vous êtes crevé. Je me suis fracturé la rotule en 3 endroits, cassé le pied et casser 2 côtes. Cela prend du temps pour guérir, donc vous filmer autre chose. J'ai perdu une grande partie de ce doigt. Regardez! (Il tend son doigt lacéré)

C'est un doigt méchant ça (je suppose qu’il a du faire un doigt d’honneur !)

Yup. Vous vous blessez toujours quand vous vous y attendais le moins. Exemple la fracture de ma rotule C’était stupide. Je venais de faire une extraordinaire scène de cascade. Quand nous avons terminé, j’étais crevé, je fais quelques gros plans et là je trébuche sur un câble, je tombe sur mon genou et je le casse. Pas cool.

Êtes-vous tenté de ne pas faire vos propres cascades?
Non, ça me plait. Quand j'ai perdu mon doigt, c'est en brisant la fenêtre d’une voiture, j’ai sorti mon arme, mais il y avait un morceau de verre qui a cisaillé mon doigt.. Nous n'avons jamais eu un accident grave à cause d'une cascade ou d'un effet spécial, parce que nous avons les meilleurs cascadeurs. Je leur suis reconnaissant, ils vous donnent la confiance nécessaire pour faire des cascades.

Vous vous regarder à la télé et au cinéma?
Non je n'aime pas ça. Je dois parfois regarder pendant le montage et j'ai horreur de cela. Je n'ai jamais été à l'aise avec ça

Pourquoi vous n'aimez pas vous voir à l'écran?
Je ne suis pas sûr, mais je pense que cela remonte à Stand By Me (1986). Je me suis regardé dans ce film et ne me suis pas du tout aimé. J'avais une idée si forte de ce personnage dans ma tête, que lorsque je me suis vu sur l'écran, c’était horrible. Je voulais voir le gosse, et je voyais seulement moi ! J’étais très déçu, même quand les gens disaient que c'était une belle interprétation. Depuis, je suis distrait par ma propre image et je ne peux pas me concentrer sur ce que fais

vous êtes né au Royaume-Uni  qu’est ce que vous aimez faire quand vous revenez sur nos rivages?
J'aime faire du tourisme, mais quand personne d'autre ne peut gâcher mes photos, vers le milieu de la nuit, vers 4h du matin, je sors avec mon appareil photo. Je suis toujours excité lorsque l’avion atterri: je sais que je suis de retour en Grande-Bretagne et j’aime ça.

Who would you like to see replace you should Jack die?

Nobody. F*ck. I’ll switch into Jack Bauer mode and do whatever I have to do to kill that b*stard. It's my job man, and people should know when I go, I’ll be going kicking and screaming. Let's say, even if Jack were to die, there are a lot of great actors that could do it, and be successful at it, but that doesn't  mean I’d be happy about it.

How physically demanding is playing Jack Bauer? 

The show has to have this energy where it burns like a big f*cking rock song from the first bar. It's not a slow jazz pièce. So I enjoy the fighting because I know it's ail about the cause and effect. I know if the fight is hurting me, it's going to look great. I mean, there is no denying that in the beating up of someone, or the beating of your character, you create the kind of energy that is absolutely integral to a show such as 24. You can't fake the fighting, or the show just wouldn't have that buzz about it. When we're punching, we're actually punching. When it looks like it hurts, I promise you this... it f*cking hurts.

Is it true that some episodes of 24 had to be rewritten to accommodate certain injuries?

There are times where you can't do the physical stuff because you're busted up. I fractured my kneecap in three places, broke my foot and snapped two ribs. That takes time to heal, so you film some other bits. I lost a huge part of this finger. Look! [He reaches out his mangled finger...]

That's one nasty finger... 

Yup. You always get hurt when you're least expecting it. The fracturing of my kneecap is the prime example. It was about as stupid an injury as you can get. We had just done this amazing stunt sequence, running through a scaffolding construction of a building. I jumped off the building and on to a moving truck, and then bounced down into a car moving in the other direction. We finished that, I was really pumped, I walked off go and do some close-ups and I tripped on a cable, smacked my knee on the ground and destroyed it. Not cool.

Are you ever tempted not to do your own stunts?

No, I love it. The piece where I lost my finger, I’d blown out some windows of a car, went to draw my weapon, caught a piece of glass and just sheared my whole finger in two. We've never had a major accident due to a stunt or special effect, and it's because the guys we're working with are the best in the world. I’m grateful for that, and it gives you the confidence to do bigger stunts.

Do you watch yourself on TV and at the cinema? 

No I don't. I have to sometimes watch it during the editing process and I even hate that. I have never been comfortable with it.

What don't you like about watching yourself on screen? 

I’m not sure, but I think this goes right back to the movie Stand By Me ail those years ago [1986]. I watched myself in that movie and didn't like myself at ail. I had such a strong vision of what that character looked like in my head, that when I saw myself running around on the screen it was just horrible. I wanted to see that kid I played, and I just saw me. I became very disappointed, even when people around me are saying it was a great performance. Ever since then, l've been distracted by my own image and I can't focus on what I was trying to do.

Finally, you were born in thé UK - what do you like to do when you come back to our shores? 

I like to do ail the tourist things, but I do them when nobody else is about to ruin my photos. Basically, in the middle of the night, about 4am, I go out with my camera. I still got excited when that plane landed and I knew I was back in Britain. I love it.
